Baking soda, also known as sodium bicarbonate, is widely used in baking.
This is because it has leavening properties, meaning it causes dough to rise by producing carbon dioxide.
Aside from cooking, baking soda has a variety of additional household uses and health benefits.
Here are some benefits and uses of baking soda.
Mouthwash is a great addition to a good oral hygiene routine. It reaches corners of your mouth and crevices of your teeth, gums and tongue that may be missed during brushing.
Many use baking soda as a replacement for mouthwash. It can help freshen your breath and provides antibacterial and antimicrobial properties.
The recipe for baking soda mouthwash is simple. Add half a teaspoon of baking soda to half a glass of warm water, and then swish as usual.
Lips:
Baking Soda is a very popular cleansing agent which benefits dark lips. Add some honey to some baking soda and mix them well. Apply this mixture on your lips for 2-3 minutes before washing it off.
Soothe Canker Sores
Canker sores are small, painful ulcers that can form inside your mouth. Unlike cold sores, canker sores do not form on the lips and aren’t contagious.
Research has found that baking soda mouthwash is great for soothing pain caused by canker sores.
You can make baking soda mouthwash using the recipe in the previous chapter. Rinse your mouth with this mixture once a day until the canker sore heals.
Hair Care:
It is believed by many people that the ingredients of baking soda can soften tresses and can help in hair growth. It is not exactly the perfect solution for hair care but it definitely has a few benefits to hair as well, like it is a great product used for removing split ends in your hair. Add a tablespoon of baking soda to a glass of water and just simply soak your split ends in the solution. You will see changes in a few days after using this technique. Ph of water is 7 and baking soda is 8.4 which is very near water on the Ph scale making it a little alkaline compared to water. I use Baking soda as an alternative to shampoo sometimes. To restores the Ph balance I do an apple cider vinegar rinse (Ph 3-5) post this.
Whiten Your Teeth
Baking soda is a popular home remedy for whitening theeth.
Many studies have found that toothpaste containing baking soda is better for whitening teeth and removing plaque than toothpaste without baking soda.
This is likely because baking soda has mild abrasive properties that let it break the bonds of molecules that stain the teeth. It also has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties that can help fight harmful bacteria.
Acne Spot Treatment
Make a paste with baking powder and water/honey. Apply it evenly on the pimple and leave it for 15 minutes. Rinse your face.

Deodorant
Surprisingly, human sweat is odorless.
Sweat only gains an odor after it is broken down by bacteria in your armpits. These bacteria convert your sweat into acidic waste products that give sweat its odor.
Baking soda can eliminate the smell of sweat by making the odors less acidic. Try patting baking soda onto your armpits and you may notice the difference.
Exfoliation:
Baking Soda is mildly abrasive in nature, which means it can exfoliate skin if rubbed gently on the skin. It helps the dead skin cells to remove and allows new skin cells to grow. It also helps in glowing our skin. Try applying dilute baking soda with water in circular motions on your skin for best results. Don’t use it every day. Just 2 times a week can be enough.
Cleaning Agent:
Baking soda is an excellent cheap alternative to those commercial grade cleaning supplies. Baking soda can be used to clean your pots and pan and removes those stubborn stains. Sprinkle in some baking soda to those greasy pots and scrub the oil and grease off. 10x result with 1/10 of effort !!
Drain Daddy:
Mix one cup of baking soda and one cup of vinegar. Let me mixture react and then pour it down the clogged drain and let it sit for 10 -15 mins. This magic mixture will clear your drain.
Dry Shampoo: Mix cornstarch and baking soda in equal quantity and you can store it in a salt shaker.When in hurry apply a small amount of it to the roots, using your hair brush or fingers run it through your hair, Baking soda will absorb the excess oil and odor (if any) in your hair and you will be ready to go !!
Caution: Do not apply Baking soda directly to your roots, it could be too strong for your scalp.
Extend life of fresh flowers:
Hate to see those fresh flowers dying within a week, add a pinch of baking soda to the water to extend the life of your favorite flowers.
Get rid of Pet Smell:
keeping a pet and keep your house odor free can be challenging. Use baking soda to sprinkle it over your pet bed, leave it for a couple of hours and then vacuum it, this will take the odor away from the pet bed.
Freshen your Toilet:
Place an open box of baking soda in your toilet and add a few drops of fresh linen essential oil to it. Let me mixture do its magic, after a couple of hours you will be welcoming yourself to a world of freshness.
Keep your brushes and combs clean:
Baking soda is great to help naturally remove oils, build up, and residue on your combs and brushes. Simply soak in a solution of water and baking soda (about 1 tsp of baking soda to a cup of water). Rinse and dry thoroughly.
Relieve Diaper Rash:
Put two tablespoons of baking soda in your baby’s bathwater to help relieve rashes.
Diaper Disposal Bins:
Instead of spending your hard earned money on those fancy products in the market, make your own Diaper Disposal Pail. Sprinkel some good amount of Baking Soda at the bottom of a regular bin and use it as Diaper Disposal Pail. It will absorb and seal away odors and keep your nursery smelling fresh
Polishing Silver Flatware:
By adding three parts baking powder to one part water, you can make a solution that will make it easy for you to polish your silver flatware. Rub onto silver and use a sponge or cloth to clean. Rinse thorough and dry for shining silver plates and serving pieces.
